The forum aims to build a more sophisticated understanding of how Aboriginal language use is affecting educational outcomes. In particular, it will focus on the achievement of literacy for Aboriginal people and the impact of success or failure on wider social and community objectives.
As the Whadaya mean Close the Gap? forum is hosted by the Australian Council of Adult Literacy (ACAL), many participants in the forum will bring an adult education background to the process. However, these issues are too large for educators to tackle alone. Other delegates are invited to contribute from the wider community including employers, Indigenous Affairs, language centres, justice, health and other education sectors.
ACAL hopes that participants will develop ideas about how to collaboratively apply this knowledge in their future work.
This forum precedes the 32nd annual ACAL conference From Strength to Strength which also offers an Indigenous education stream.
